São Brás de Alportel is an ideal place to stay if you want to explore the LOVELY COUNTRYSIDE in the foothills of the Algarve. It’s also not far to drive to the BEACH and there are some excellent GOLF COURSES also within a short drive. The original wealth of the town was from cork production and it was the biggest cork producing center in Portugal. In 1914 it was made a municipality due to the economic importance of the area. The town is a mix of old and new, with typical, low white Algarvean houses amongst the grander merchant houses from its wealthy past. The area near the church is the older part of the town and typically Algarvean with narrow, cobbled streets criss-crossing each other and small shops and cafes in between the houses.

A very short distance away is LOULÉ which is famous for its Saturday market and it’s Brazilian style carnival, but also has an interesting historic area with a 13/14th CENTURY CASTLE. As well as the Saturday gypsy market it also has an excellent daily market in the new Arabian style market building which is open every morning except Sunday.

The Algarve has over 300 days of sunshine providing the perfect weather for both vacations and permanent relocation to this beautiful country, where you can relax and watch the world go by in one of the numerous cafes by day or enjoy a cocktail in one of the busy bars by night. For sport enthusiasts, there are many activities from golf on one of the many championship courses, through to many cycling or walking trials or water sports along the beach.
